Givenchy Nightingale Handbag - Fall/Winter 2009

Givenchy Nightingale Handbag Fall/Winter 2009

I’ve been in love with the Givenchy Nightingale handbag for a while already, just never got one. The bag is simple and versatile, best thing is it’s roomy so that I’m able to carry my “life” in there. The double shoulder belt can be transformed into a shoulder bag which makes the bag drop and become more slouchy, which is just as nice as carried on the arm. For Fall/Winter 2009, the Nightingale comes in new colors and fabrications pushing the iconic bag forward in an even more sophisticated direction. Leather is cut out in one version into strips creating a bandage effect. The colors available are red, navy blue, lilac, black and petrol. The red is pretty amazing, loving it!

Bigger pics after the jump…

“Christopher Bailey will bring the label’s 2010 spring collection to town to celebrate the 25th anniversary of LFW and the British Fashion Council. This will be followed by a special event hosted at Burberry’s brand spanking new headquarters.”

M&A passes luxury brands by (FT)
“The downturn in the luxury goods industry is the worst in 20 years, according to Johann Rupert, chairman and member of the founding family of Richemont. Conventional wisdom would have it that conditions are thus ripe for a wave of consolidation in the still-fragmented industry. But analysts caution the catalysts for consolidation are not yet in place.”

The Versace saga continued to play out over the weekend in Milan. “Gianni Versace SpA’s board meets tonight and will decide the fate of Chief Executive Officer Giancarlo Di Risio, who may be fired after tensions flared over creative control with Donatella Versace, exacerbating disputes over cost cuts, three people familiar with the situation said.”

Backlund

I know I consistently post about Sandra Backlund and frankly, I would just expect those posts like clockwork each season because initally there is a certain amount of nepotism going on (in that she's a friend...) but then actually, then it does go back to meritocracy because the level of her work deserves it. Errr....not that it's some kind of supreme honour to be posted about here.... it's no Napoleonic medal or anything.

The main reason is that season after season, Backlund's lookbook images always seem to distil the core of her work down to a straight forward point that basically gets seared into your brain making them unforgettable (sadly not the case for a lot of lookbooks....). These photos of her A/W09-10 collection Control by Peter Gehrke are exactly that; controlled, getting straight to the point of her collaboration with Maglificio Miles, throwing less extreme shapes than previously seen and sticking to one colour, showing a tempered restraint in what is essentially an experiment for Backlund. No stockists as yet I think but knowing Sandra, she's probably keeping her stream of constant queries with people presuming that she has a large production stream behind her and not realising, that Backlund has flown solo for most of her career (not even daring to take an intern). An independent to the core and a designer that is demonstrating a different kind of fashion route.

Oh and thanks Knit Kicks for highlighting the fact that Backlund has made a custom piece for a Sony Bravia advert...

**EDIT** Apologies - my bad. Not sure where Knit Kicks got the information from but the piece in the Sony Bravia ad isn't Sandra Backlund's work... another "Who Dun It?" mystery to solve...

The long and short of a tricky trend

Shorts story: (left to right) Dries Van Noten, Louis Vuitton, Chloe
Shorts story: (left to right) Dries Van Noten, Louis Vuitton, Chloe

The season that has brought us the sartorial challenges of the harem pant, pink leopard print and the power shoulder presents a further conundrum – super-short shorts. Once the staple of sun-drenched beaches, Proven??al bike rides and alfresco dining en vacances, shorts have been given an uptown polish this summer by a stellar cast of fashion designers. Smart and sexy, the new shorts skim mid-thigh, come rolled at the hem and belted high on the waist and are made for chic restaurants and glamorous soirées (they’ve been dubbed “cocktail” shorts).

Hannah MacGibbon, the London-born creative director of Chloé, made shorts the focus of her debut collection which was inspired, in part, by the nonchalant elegance of Lauren Hutton. The Seventies Supermodel, who epitomised the American outdoor girl dream, had a penchant for silk blouses and flak jackets paired with safari shorts; MacGibbon reworked the look with pretty scallop-hem silk versions teamed with matching tailored jackets, rolled hem styles in khaki green and even a pair in tomato-red leather. “I wanted to concentrate on structure and cut, the waist and, yes, lots of leg,” she said after the show.

MacGibbon wasn’t the only designer to feature shorts. At Louis Vuitton, navy tailored shorts in cotton drill took on a more exotic tone when paired with sandals dangling with tribal feathers and beads (one of the most influential looks of the season); Dolce & Gabbana showed luxe silk “pyjama” versions worn with ornate trophy jackets; Dries Van Noten offered beautifully embellished, chequered, gold shorts; and Marc Jacobs fashioned them in stripy cotton in a more casual take for his Marc by Marc Jacobs line. Voluminous bloomers, as seen at Alexander Wang in coral silk, abound but are an acquired taste: they are the marmite of the shorts world – you’ll either love them or hate them.

Away from the catwalk, the shorts wave has been rolling for some time. Early adopters include bad-girl model Alice Dellal, who is rarely seen out of her punkish, rock-chic signature outfit of biker jacket, fishnet tights, high heels and super-short denim cut-offs; television presenter Alexa Chung, whose baguette-thin legs and tomboy style lend themselves well to vintage silk tap shorts; and socialite Caroline Sieber, who looks quite the chic mademoiselle in her Topshop wide-legged, leather version and Gallic blue shirt.

Meanwhile, fashion-forward actress Chlo?? Sevigny has been airing her pins in many tiny shorts of late, including several by Chloé. I met her during London Fashion Week in February when she was debuting her collection for American label and store Opening Ceremony. She was wearing vintage Thierry Mugler black leather flared shorts, fierce black heels and a pale pink silk shirt from her own line – and boy did she look good.

There’s a balancing act when it comes to wearing this season’s shorts. Those crafted from luxe, feminine fabrics such as silk and satin (they look more like lingerie culottes) work best with a boyfriend blazer and simple oversized T-shirt. Conversely, a more masculine cut needs a prettier top (try Warehouse for delicate Victoriana lace blouses). Either way, revealing acres of leg means your upper half benefits from more substantial pieces – a cropped vest would show just a touch too much flesh.

“They are fab alternatives to skirts and much more chic,” says Sukeena Rao, style consultant at Liberty, who is a fan. “The best ones around are by Stella McCartney, Dries Van Noten, the more casual floral versions by APC or Cacharel, and the new faded and ripped denim shorts by Current Elliott.”

Rao recommends mixing shorts with tailored separates such as a tuxedo jacket with a well-cut camisole underneath for evening, or fine knitwear and chunky block heels for day. “It’s important to think about the overall silhouette. If they are too long, roll them up to show a little more leg. Ensure that you try on different shoes with different styles of shorts. Once you find the right ones you will wear them to death.” Try Topshop’s grey, suede cuff heels teamed with faded denim, or Nicholas Kirkwood’s sculptural sandals with more tailored versions.

Of course, the caveat here is having a good pair of pins. Although the new fashion shorts are great with opaque tights, there comes a time (when the sun comes out) when hosiery becomes a no-goer.

To get legs shorts-ready, find a great exfoliator and buff your skin until it gleams, apply a great fake tan (such as Rodial Brazilian Tan or Lancome Flash Bronzer Leg) and strap yourself into chunky heels – a nude or camel pair works wonders for lengthening legs. And for the seriously devoted, a programme of pilates should tone up those muscles in no time.

Anna Wintour Hoping To Save Fashion With Parties

imageAnna Wintour is introducing her own take on saving fashion, much like the recent pop-up shopping endeavor spearheaded by indie fashion blog Refinery29. But while Refinery29 emphasizes heavily discounted designs (an approach that, as I’ve noted in the past, has been wildly successful), Wintour is keeping things even more simple: i.e., “throw a party.”

Called “Fashion’s Night Out,” the proposal translates to a citywide series of fetes. “On Sept. 10, at the beginning of the next New York Fashion Week, stores all over the city are being asked to stay open, as late as midnight, and to throw parties that will be open to the public.” No word has been released as to whether or not discounts or other shopping initiatives will be offered, meaning aside from the novelty of shopping after-dark, the major draw just may be the potential for free booze.

Causes of Hair Loss

Some Vital Signs of Hair Loss

Losing our “crown of glory” is one of our most dreaded nightmares. Hair is the most important part of our body. It gives us the look that we need to project our personality externally. If it is your habit to comb your hair, you might be surprised to find bulk of hair forked in your comb and this leaves you alarmed on what is happening. The usual hair cycle will normally last between 2 to 6 years. During this period, hair grows about 1 centimeter every month and at the same time will shed the old ones. According to studies, average people will loss 100 strands of hair a day. If you estimate that your hair loss is more than what is expected, and then perhaps, it is time to consult your dermatologist. But before consulting the nearest dermatologist, it is good to know what the root causes of hair loss.

Causes of Excessive Hair Losses

If you notice some abnormal hair loss in any part, it is better to be familiar with these causes that might have triggered it. Hormonal problem is one of the major causes of hair loss. Hyperactive thyroid glands will secrete excessive amount of hormones. When it reaches the hairy region, it might cause the hair to fall down due to some chemical reaction with the follicle and the hormones. This incident is usually obvious among pregnant women who would experience hormonal changes during her pregnancy.

There are also some forms of medication which can contribute to excessive hair loss. Chemotherapy for treating cancer victims is one such cause. You would have observed from cancer patients, that they usually loss hair during their chemotherapy sessions. Besides that, excessive vitamin A can also result to excessive hair loss. And lastly, birth control pills and other tranquilizers are completing the list of medication that can trigger hair loss. Excessive hair treatment like hot oil can also be causes of hair loss. Scars will be formed to a burned scalp due to the abuse of this treatment. Any scarred area will always be left bald.

Hair loss might also be a symptom for those who are suffering lupus or diabetes. Consultation with the Physician about recurring hair loss is the initial step and helps in detecting early signs of those causes and treating them on time. In this way, any hair loss must be treated with utmost care and response. Our head is also a favorable site for microorganism to grow, especially fungi. While these microorganisms might exist every now and then, any increase in their population will always result to some irritation. This is the main cause of fungal infection which can also trigger hair loss.

Other causes of hair loss are straining the hair with the habit of doing tight braids and pigtails. These fashionable hairstyles can cause traction alopecia. Traction alopecia is a form of hair loss due to an excessive hair pulling. Hair pulling will result to scars in the scalps. Just like excessive hair treatment, scarred area caused by hair pulling will always result to permanent hair loss. But there is a baldness which is a normal thing, especially to men. Some men have some pattern of baldness that is imprinted already to the genes. In this way, men can have early signs of baldness that usually occur at the middle of the scalp then forming a hair line pattern across the head. In rare cases, woman especially the elderly can also develop this kind of baldness just as men do.

Possible Hair Loss Treatment

If you are alarmed of your hair loss, you might be considering hair loss treatment to prevent it. If taking excessive medication is the reason you might attribute, perhaps it would be better to consult the doctor and ask for a dosage which might prevent your hair from falling. In this way, enough dosage can be tolerable to your body. Fungi infection must be consulted to the nearest dermatologist. Here, the dermatologist will prescribe you a medication to eliminate the growth and overpopulation of fungi in your scalp.

You might also consider limiting any treatment to your hair and scalp. Moderate hair treatment will not only relax your scalp, it will also give time to heal your scalp which has been burned from your previous sessions of hair treatment. It is not only sparing your money for another parlor, it is also saving your hair from total damage. If baldness is inherited, then it is one of the inevitable things for a man to face. However, over the counter medicine like minoxidil can be taken to prevent them. Finastride is also another medication but it must be prescribed by a dermatologist. But, Finastride is only good for men. Eventually, hair loss will still occur at a certain age. In this way, the only thing a man can hide from hair loss is to get some hair transplant, or perhaps, wear wig.
